i really think it's a good thing to pitch your own work against other artists to some degree

idk whenever i see myself a little bit closer to catching up to my senpais(even if it's just to where they were at my age) it rLY HELPS
i mean
don't do it to a level in which you put yourself down
or you don't get too hung up on it
and don't copy an artist, just be like "wOW. sOMEdAY I'll catch up two you dagummit"
every artist specializes in /something/ naturally. Like, some styles will just have a better grip on anatomy, but that doesn't mean shit if the characters just look like posable dolls. Or like, someone can have an unbelievable grasp on lightsources but their actual lineart is shit.
so that's when you have to diverge from comparing yourself to an artist.
you know what i mean

but man as for inspiration and competition I think it's a pretty good idea

ALSO back in the day i wanted to have better concepts and coloring like one of my inspirations but it rEALLy clashed with my thought process and stuff. like. bright colors and strong contrast and gory concepts are rEALLY COOL but they aren't something that really genuinely interest me so i think it's also important to realize that you're juxtaposing yourself and the inspiration, you're not replicating their own mind!
yea h.
I DON'T KNOW IF I JUST Gave everyone the worst advice possible but um,,,??? that's just what i learned! because you're going to improve if you keep at it no matter what so giving yourself some motivation via measuring up to others i don't think is rly a bad thing.
maybe im explaining it awfully.
((except when you plan and write down their ages throughout the years to pitch against yourself like i totally did not just do.
that's weird.
don't do it.))

also idk if i made it clear i don't mean copy an artist you like i mean be **inSPired**
//i have four more hours to write up a six page midterm and instead im looking through the yullen tag
//it's not even my ship man
//don't rly have a dgm ship
//i mean i guess yullen reigns top via right of favorite characters
//it's not rly anything i ship hardcore

Yes. Turtelly true. I guess, at least ^^;

I do this too. Like, I'll look at your art or another sempai (not many people over here know who I'd be talking about, if I say her username) for human anatomy. It helps me focus on it.
Then I'll look at Blue's for animal anatomy.
Improvement is the only time you should be comparing your art to another's.
But try not to put yourself down in the process.

nah it's actually a pretty good idea. as long as you don't funnel the comparison towards putting yourself down and instead use it as a sort of influence or inspiration or motivation to work harder and achieve what you want and wHOA end up like your favorite artists and be as amazing as them?!?! it ends up working out quite nicely
